George Lucas
George Walton Lucas Jr. (geboren am 14. Mai 1944) ist ein amerikanischer Filmemacher und Unternehmer. Lucas ist bekannt für die Entwicklung der Star-Wars- und Indiana-Jones-Reihen und die Gründung von Lucasfilm, LucasArts und Industrial Light & Magic. Er war Vorsitzender von Lucasfilm, bevor er das Unternehmen 2012 an The Walt Disney Company verkaufte.
Nach seinem Abschluss an der University of Southern California im Jahr 1967 gründete Lucas zusammen mit dem Filmemacher Francis Ford Coppola American Zoetrope. Lucas schrieb und führte Regie bei THX 1138 (1971), der auf seinem früheren Studenten-Kurzfilm Electronic Labyrinth basiert: THX 1138 4EB, der bei den Kritikern erfolgreich war, aber ein finanzieller Misserfolg wurde. Seine nächste Arbeit als Drehbuchautor und Regisseur war der Film American Graffiti (1973), der von seiner Jugend in Modesto, Kalifornien, Anfang der 1960er Jahre inspiriert war und von der neu gegründeten Lucasfilm produziert wurde. Der Film war sowohl in der Kritik als auch kommerziell erfolgreich und erhielt fünf Oscar-Nominierungen, darunter für den besten Film.
Lucas' nächster Film, die epische Weltraumoper Star Wars (1977), hatte eine schwierige Produktion, war aber ein Überraschungshit, der zum umsatzstärksten Film der damaligen Zeit wurde, sechs Oscars gewann und ein kulturelles Phänomen auslöste. Lucas war Produzent und Co-Autor der Fortsetzungen Das Imperium schlägt zurück (1980) und Die Rückkehr der Jedi (1983). Zusammen mit Regisseur Steven Spielberg entwickelte, produzierte und schrieb er die Indiana-Jones-Filme Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Temple of Doom (1984), The Last Crusade (1989) und Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).
1997 brachte Lucas die Star-Wars-Trilogie als Teil einer Sonderausgabe mit mehreren Änderungen neu heraus; 2004 und 2011 wurden Home-Media-Versionen mit weiteren Änderungen veröffentlicht. Mit der Star-Wars-Prequel-Trilogie The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) und Revenge of the Sith (2005) kehrte er zur Regie zurück. Zuletzt arbeitete er an der CGI-animierten Fernsehserie Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2014, 2020), dem Kriegsfilm Red Tails (2012) und dem CGI-Film Strange Magic (2015) mit.
Lucas ist einer der finanziell erfolgreichsten Filmemacher der Geschichte und wurde für vier Academy Awards nominiert. Seine Filme gehören zu den 100 umsatzstärksten Filmen an den nordamerikanischen Kinokassen, bereinigt um die Inflation der Eintrittspreise.
